Facts About Soil

Knwoing some of the facts about soil is very important. Soil care is one of the most fundamental parts of gardening. If you want healthy, happy plants that shrug off pests and disease you need healthy soil.

Nearly any soil can be prepared to a healthy consistency for plants. This can take work especially if you have a clay based soil in your garden but it is possible.

Soil conditioners for example are dug into the soil for quick improvement or are laid down as mulch around plants. Mulching suppresses weeds, retains moisture and supplies some nutrients to the plants and the mulching material will eventually be incorporated into the soil by worms.

You may need to dig out and replace soil if it is creating a big problem with planting.

Digging the soil when it’s dry loosens the crumbs and can destroy its ability to hold water. When it’s too wet, you compact the soil making it hard for water to drain. Farmers work the soil at dawn and finish by midday and return early in the evening. Working on wet soil, do not stand on the soil you are working on. Planting Plants after 4PM, as the sun sets and its heat intensity decreases. This gives the plants a chance to settle in as the day cools.
