Having a Garden Pond
The garden pond is a perfect addition to virtually any garden - Whether that be with just fish or you want to add fountains, waterfalls and plants - there are so many possibilities for creating a wonderful looking garden pond. The rushing sound of a waterfall can help create a relaxing and tranquil environment or maybe you would prefer just some colorful fish, giving you something to watch whilst you enjoy a nice summers evening in your garden. The upkeep and maintenance of a pond is reasonably easy - there however a few rules that you must follow.
- Plants are optional but are highly recommended - they help restore natures balance, control algae and oxygenate the water. - If you do keep fish, you must adjust the amount of food dependant on water temperature. During the summer months your fish may require more food as their activity is increased, vice versa in the winter months they eat much less.
- Winter months can be difficult - Fish will survive during ice and frost periods as long as there is a continuous flow of water into the pond, stopping the whole pond from freezing. - Flowing water is also essential for removing chemicals from the surrounding environment and also oxygenating the water. - While the environment will naturally look after your water and many of the water changes etc will be handed by weather conditions on a daily basis, you must also make sure that during any times of drought you ensure that the water levels in the pond are maintained. - Any debris, rocks, stones and weeds etc must be removed on a regular basis - An every day fishing net is ideal for this. A path or border around the pond will help prevent rocks etc from falling to into the pond. |
