Hanging Baskets
Hanging baskets can be a welcome addition to virtually any garden space, you can make them as plain or as bright and colourful as you like and they will fit into any size garden. Even if you only have a very small yard, patio garden, or even just a balcony, a hanging planter or basket can be put in place to brighten up whatever space you have available! They are quite versatile and you can plant many types of flowers inside – One popular recommendation is to have lots of trailing plants. These will hang down nicely from your basket and then you can fill the middle with more upright plants to give the basket an even and full appearance. There are several different types and designs of basket available. The easiest to manage are the wire type that come with a fiber liner which you fill with peat. These are easy to find at any gardening center and many hardware stores. These are very simple to maintain and they give you the scope to plants on top of the soil as well as through the holes of the wire basket itself. There are many different types of flowers available – Some trailing ones that are recommended are verbena, trillium or trailing petunias. You can also add something like creeping Charlie – a plant that does not bloom in the summer. This means that you will have something almost all year around. Remember that you can plant as much as you want in your basket, but younger plants must be planted a few inches apart. The same as the rest of your garden your hanging basket will need feeding. You can choose either to feed it a liquid feed once or twice a fortnight or you can buy compost that already has all the nutrients you need to keep the plants well over a year – This of course is in addition to your usual regular watering! A very usefull tip is to place a shallow bowl at the bottom of the liner before adding your peat, this allows the basket to retain moisture for longer, otherwise water does have a tendancy to flow straight through your basket leaving your plants thirsty! Remember to check the flowers you are buying and what environment they thrive best in – Some will work best in the shade whereas others love the sunshine. Deadhead the plants regularly so that the plants keep creating fresh blooms and you’ll be the envy of your neighbors.
