Organic Gardening Magic

Organic Garden Magic

Vegetable gardening can seem a bit daunting for first timers. But by planning properly and taking it one step a time, you can start anytime, anywhere. Question is, how?

First question to have in mind is of course the ‘where’. What would be the best place to start your very own vegetable patch? A few checks to consider when choosing a suitable location includes the position of the sun, source of water, air circulation of the area, slope factor, and how convenient the access is. All these should point you to the right direction for choosing the perfect location.

Second, the ‘how’ questions, as in how large would you want your garden to be? Ideally, if you would like to have a garden that will provide all the vegetables you need, an area of 5 square meters per person should be adequate.

A small plot can also do wonders. Vegetables can be grown in pots or containers  too (think cherry tomatoes) on a balcony or patio where there is a good source of natural sunlight.

Realistically, you should not plan on a larger garden if you won’t have time to tend to it. Also, decide on the types of planting systems you would be using for your garden, whether you prefer it in rows, raised beds, hills, poles etc. Take note to study the advantages and drawbacks before deciding the one that is most suited for your garden.

Other things that should be taken into consideration include testing of your soil and any necessary adjustments to make it drain efficiently and absorb nutrients easily. This is to make sure that you have a well productive garden.

You would also need to consider planting crops that are more suitable for the climate of your country. So it would be a good idea to consult your local seed catalogues or garden centers soon.
